Before we know where we are the fruit trees will be in flower, and we will be praying that we don’t get any late frosts. Up here in the North East we can have very cold weather until April/May whilst those of you in the South are soaking up the sun and enjoying balmy weather. Mind, we don’t get hosepipe bans up here. Thanks to the Kielder reservoir, built originally to serve the steel plants of Teesside when the process involved using huge amounts of water. The manufacturing process changed and the water was no longer needed but we have an abundant supply of water.
I have already started with seeds and the tomatoes, broad and runner beans and potatoes are on the go. I used to be almost self-sufficient with vegetables, but an ageing body and arthritis have taken their toll. We still grow a lot of soft fruit in cages carefully constructed by himself. There is always far too much for us and most gets given away or frozen for the wintertime.
I bet I have a few of you grabbing the plant dictionary!!
