Is anyone else puzzled (a) by this clue,(b) by how each answer can have 1 letter removed and still fit into the grid?

Parge (to plaster) - anag of 'great pains' is 'parge saint'

I'm not sure I get the removal of one letter, though...

Thanks Lie-in King. It turns out that the incorrect grid was published, so it was just a straightforward crossword, although the instructions were to remove 1 letter from each answer before inserting.
