There was a noisy bird outside - opening the curtains scared it away.

Thanks Quizmonkey, but apparently not the right answer!
He was someone who worked nights and was used to sleeping in daylight?
His partner room mate is snoring. The noise is keeping him awake. When he opens the curtains the daylight wakes up his room mate. Now the man can go to sleep without being disturbed
maaybe he was afraid to sleep in a darkened room
He was deaf, and knew the sunlight would wake him up?
The man used to be blind but had just had an operation to restore his sight. In the darkness he had this fear that he had lost his sight again. He opened the curtains and when he say the daylight his worries evaporated and he was able to fall asleep

I like your latest try factor30, but in fact slaney has got it correct!

Although he wasn't deaf, he knew the daylight would wake him in the morning for an important business meeting.

Thank you slaney.

Radio station made a correction when they gave the answer out to their listeners.

The man was indeed deaf! This makes more sense, as he could have used an alarm clock if he wasn't deaf.

So you are 100% correct slaney!
