yes I have seen 4d before as water as bert_h says, seems an odd clue for o= oxygen, why start at I?

Alphabetically: 'H' comes before 'I' and 'N' comes before 'O'. So H to O (H2O) = water.

I remain unconvinced as to why the setter puts 6 letters in alphabetical order Why not A to H as well ?

I'm with you dave1948. There's nothing in the clue to indicate you should take the next in sequence, not is there a definition of "O" or Oxygen.

I can't see it. All I see is "oxygen" Symbol for Oxygen is O but articulated and the letters I to N I don't know !! Nor apparently does anyone else
