Could be I in the clue I took as could be Iodine i.e. could be an element and an element is part of a toaster.Of course |I could be totally wrong but it is all I could think of.

Mazie 23D is Oblique sun on gardens which (taking your previous answer of corkscrew) starts with S - I think that is Skew which gives us E-E-E-- but like you I think the word play is obscure
