It probably is overran, andrit, but I don't agree that we can rule out overrun -if a place has been invaded you could say it had been overrun.
I agree with factor30. The answer is overrun.
44a: Thanks katburd. The way I see it is :
Synonym for invade is overrUn according to your entry.
Invaded is past tense of invade.
Therefore answer is past tense of overrUn which is overrAn.
