subtract 4 from each side. 9d=5d+8
subtract 5d from each side. 4d=8
d=2
9d + 4 = 5d + 12
9d - 5d = 12 - 4
4d = 8
d = 2
Sandy's answer is the way it is taught in schools today. (what you do to one side you do to the other)

Captain's answer is the way it used to be taught (change the side - change the sign)
It's 50 years since I was in school. How did I know that?
Not far behind you either Sandy!
Captain's way (the old way) is easier to teach them to get the right answer IMO
Thanks Prudie - but less of the 'old' please
We keep up to date helping our grandchildren.
Sorry Cap'n I was taking it from Gen2 and it is also my way!
