Charities can sell them on by weight to stamp dealers to raise funds.

... and the dealers sell them for £15 a kilo (mostly common UK) up to about £40 a kilo (overseas, commemoratives). This means it would be really silly to POST any used stamps to a charity - they'd be far better off if you donated them the postage cost instead! Either take the stamps into a charity shop, or wait till you've got enough to be worth a trip to a local dealer
