Is it Hammer - not sure why - though i believe he is a detective so would account for crack cases

HOLMES - Sherlock of course. The whole clue works as a cryptic (& lit or whatever) but one might perhaps also read it as M (foremost of minds) inside HOLES (cracks) with 'cases' as the enclosure indicator.
