Thank you Mahonia. It doesn't work though does it? The wordplay "picked up" in the clue means the solution depends on the pronunciation of ROWS.
ROWS pronounced ROSE is "propels a boat" or "things in a line"
ROWS meaning arguments or, very loosely scraps, would be pronounced like ROUSE.
Mind you, Bannsider presumably comes from NI, so God knows how he would pronounce it!
You're right, Turast. Rows meaning arguments/scraps doesn't sound like rose but I can only see this as the answer and had assumed I was just missing some subtlety in the "when picked up" bit.
