PMU can stand for:
Paris Mutuel Urbain, the French state-controlled betting system (it sponsors the green jersey in the Tour de France)
Performance Monitoring Unit, a logical component of modern processors that can be configured to monitor (count) various types of performance-related hardware events
Periyar Maniammai University
Phasor measurement unit, a device which measures phasors of AC quantities (voltage, current) in sync with a common time source (usually using a GPS radio clock)
Police MRT Unit of the Singapore Police Force
Pomeranian Medical University
Power Management Unit, an integrated circuit on some computers that controls sleeping, waking from sleep, hard drive spin down, and other power-related features
Pregnant mare urine
Presbyterian Missionary Union
Prince Mohammad bin Fahd University
Progressive Muslim Union

but I can't find a sensible 8-letter synonym for any of them, sorry :(
Hi gen I think PMU is the name of the crossword 8) across one-time is the clue (I think the bracket is a mistake )

ps. Hope you are both well x
Thanks Mazie, we're still both plodding on.
PMU isn't a puzzle I've come across before - I thought it was two clues being asked. I assumed the puzzle title was 'One Time' (but not heard of that either.
Yes it's a crossword from Pick Me Up

Yes I do Mazie, I'll email you shortly.

Thank you for the explanation ForF (yet another new avatar! who are you trying to hide from?) I knew I shouldn't have ventured in here mid-week - it's a whole new ball-game.

Sorry messyme for going off-topic but you seem to have the answer you required.
