ball 5p, bat 1.05  hence bat 1 dearer?
Question Author

aww, i still dont understand, sob. i cant get my head around it.

kkeggie, the ball cost 5p the bat has to be a 1 DEARER so it must be 1.05

ball = 5p

bat = 1.05

therefore the bat cost a 1 MORE

total price 1.10
you take the pound away, because that is how much dearer it is, which leaves you with 10p. divide that by two (5p for the bat and 5p for the ball)and then add the pound back on - then theres a pound difference between the two prices, which is what you want!

kkeggie, Try this one which is along the same lines!

A box full of apples weighs 16 pounds. When this same box is half full with apples, it weighs eight and a half pounds. How heavy is the box?

bcos 1.5p is 1 more than 5p.

i cant do maths to save my life, i dont have a clue
Box of apples weighs 16lbs. The box weighs 1lb., apples weigh 15lbs. Half of 15lbs is 7 1/2 lbs+ 1lb for box =8 1/2lbs
for box plus half of apples. To work it out: box plus apples = 16 lbs. Whole box plus half apples weigh 8 1/2 lbs, thus if you cut box in half, half box plus half apples would = 8lbs. 1/2 box therefore =1/2 lb, and whole box weighs 1lb.
Ah - got you crofter.......box weighs 1 pound!

Well done everyone!

This question was set on a maths paper for an entrance exam to an Independent School for boys aged 8 years!

Kkeggie  -  This is your homework for tonight:

1. A salmon weighs 10lb plus half its weight. How much does it weigh?

2. Which is worth more, a ton of 10 notes or half a ton of 20 notes?

3. Which weighs more, a ton of water or a ton of oil?

Good Luck!

1. A salmon weighs 10lb plus half its weight. How much does it weigh? - 15lbs?

2. Which is worth more, a ton of 10 notes or half a ton of 20 notes? Theyre worth the same

3. Which weighs more, a ton of water or a ton of oil? neither, they weigh the same

Well done for answering so quickly Kkeggie!

Q1. The answer is 20lb.  Think about it  -  if it weighs 10lb plus half its weight, then 10lb must be half its weight, i.e. the other half!  Don't feel bad, we all get this wrong the first time (but not the second!)

Q2. Take a pair of scissors and cut a 20 note in half, then weigh this against a 10 note . . .They're not the same!  In other words 2x10 weighs more than 1x20. Now what's your answer?

Q3. You are of course quite correct!

i still dont get the salmon question, i cant get my head around it. dont worry tho, i cant do maths!

As per 10 - 20 question, you asked what was worth more, not what weighed more.

im glad i got a question right tho! im better at visual maths problems, like shapes in sequences etc,

Kkeggie  -  thanks for the feedback.  Don't worry too much about the salmon question  -  more important things in life!  I hope you agree that half a ton of 20 notes is a better deal than one ton of tenners  -  if not then I'll swap with you anytime!  Adios, ja.
Just logged on to this.  think of it this way kkeggie, if you assumed the ball was 10p, the bat would have to be 1.10 to make it 1 dearer, (total cost for set then 1.20)otherwise it would be only 90p dearer!
