I've got back a Birds quiz and the answer to the clue "a surly fellow" is chough. Can anyone explain this to me (in words of one syllable!).

Just putting chough and surly into google comes back with chuff, clownish or surly and chuffiness - in a surly manner

So when you say, 'I was dead chuffed'. It doesn't mean you were happy? I really didn't know that.
Ha! Doc. Snap!

Thank you, DS. Chough is pronounced chuff, surely there should have been a "sounds like" in the clue, although I probably still wouldn't have got it. I did Google both words, but not together. Many thanks for taking the trouble.
My dictionary says a chuff is a churl or sullen fellow.
So, as Doc and I say, why do we say, 'I'm chuffed' .........meaning the opposite?
A chough is a member of the crow family I think. Does that help? Check out a book of British birds it might give you the answer you are looking for
Also pleased from chubby cheeked!
I know what a chough is. What I don't know is why we say, 'I'm chuffed'
Do not, I said do NOT, look up 'chuff' in the Urban Dictionary........
'Chuffed' is a little better....

Nungate, yes it's a member of the crow family, I just couldn't see how it was linked to a surly fellow. It seems to be a homophone.

Thank you all for your help.
Okey dokey, shoota.
Bet you do....
I won't. I'm a bit of a prude.

God, Shoota, you did that deliberately didn't you. Naughty!
Moi, BQ?
I'm the epitome of innocence - ask anyone....
Hah!!!
