...football match in a far distant country would you take the bet? I can't understand how match fixing would work. A wise bookie would tell the prospective punter to take a hike.

sandy...bookies make their money from people who have more money than sense...its their profession. They are highly unlikely to turn away trade in the same manner that tobacconists are unlikely to serve smokers.
if it was a bet on the result wouldn't all twenty two players have to be involved?

They want mug punters. If someone wanted to bet on a red card being handed out in the first 10 minutes of the second half of a game, the bookie might reasonably smell a rat.
