Need Help With Question -Not Answer

This is a question from The Diversity of Dogs Quiz. I am not looking for the answer ,so if you know please dont tell me.
How many spots in total were involved in the rescue by Anita and Roger's pets (3).
I know who Anita and Roger are, and I know who the pets are, I have seen a figure on Google about number of spots, which is too many for the answer,so what do you think "spots "mean ?

If you look on wiki in the animation section of how this xxx was created it suggests spots are in fact the spots but a very small number was needed to start with. A number that fits your clue.

'Spots' is used by some as an abbreviation for a Dog breed.
