No best answer has yet been selected by gen2. Once a best answer has been selected, it will be shown here.
For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.'King Penguin' did in fact offer a few clues in the preamble that could have helped, but equally, other references could have been misleading.
The mentions of 'thermal springs' and 'hot springs' was supposed to implant the word 'Spring' in your mind.
It did just that for first player Grannydi who claimed 2 points for SPRING WATER
A couple, of mentions, towards the end, referring to 'Light' should have suggested 'Lamp'
Third player, Tearinghair was first with LAVA LAMP. Boxtops, Cliffyg, Kawakiri and Cupid04 were also remembered that 60s invention (or its recent revival) within the bonus window for 2 points each.
Incidentally, when planning this week's challenge, I considered making 'LAVA' link with 'TORY' but rejected it on the grounds that only Strix was likely to guess it - He did! I therefore award him 2 points in consolation.
I also mentioned trying to get the last few players onto the scoreboard but Beejay1124, and then Cupid04, who were already out of the 'free-fall club', opted for FREE FALL for their 2 points.
Three minutes into the game and Kawakiri opted for FIELD TRIP (2 points) to complete the discovery of the links.
Thereafter there were only single points available for matches.
Five players managed to achieve double-hits, kawakiri, cupid04, elliemay1, seekeerz and Handbaglady. The first two were on full bonus points so I declare equal horshots this week.

Congratulations to all scorers and a big thank you to everyone for participating in this bit of fun over the last 7 years
Thank you also fo the kind comments and sentiments expressed in the threads. You are very welcome.
Thanks also to Crofter (and others) who got this game started in the first place.
Finally, we are all grateful to the late Michael Mepham (MM), in whose memory this game was instituted.
I hope you will all continue to support the KM Links game that Seekeerz oversees. That will continue as normal.
Good bye, but not farewell - I'll still be around on The AnswerBank.
All the best to everyone,

Would just like to add my thanks to gen2 (and crofter before him) for all the excellent work he has put into this competition over the years.
I joined the Answerbank in November 2007, and in January I first took part in the Links games. I have missed very few weeks since, and will certainly miss the wonderful friendship in these games with so many people I have never even met
Hopefully the KM links will still provide this, and it would be nice if the Friday night get together ihe shrubbery could be retained and perhaps restored to its previously popular extent.
Good wishes to all who have taken part.

And many thanks from me too, gen2, for shepherding us through the past few years so very well !!
I guess I know better than most just what does go into running these games, but I only have to cope with the Telegraph going AWOL to really mess things up plus my efforts come into play in the mornings so my 'social life' is not greatly hampered.
It has been great fun and much enjoyed xx

Well done to our final two winners, and thanks indeed to Gen2 and MM Links founder Crofter, for all their hard work, dedication, and whimsical humour. I was there at the start and sadly, there at the end. I remember many happy and creative (!) hours in the shrubbery, especially Sarumite's cunning plans, and the various weird and wonderful disguises we all donned, in order to be first out of the bushes in the morning.
Thanks again everyone.
I have tried to convey your appreciation to Crofter, but the email bounced. He obviously cannot be reached by that method.
According to his profile, the last time he logged in here was on April 1st.
When I get back to Fife (in a week's time) I will make further efforts to contact him.

I find it hard to think of anything fresh to add to the tributes paid here to Gen2 and Crofter. It was Crofter who, on discovering that I was a retired maths teacher, suggested my setting name of The Count :-). Thank you both for providing the setters with the opportunity to challenge me so regularly and for giving me so much entertainment in the time I've been involved. Best wishes, Steve
Thanks Gen2, and Crofter, for the enjoyment over the last 6 years that I have been participating in the MM link games. It was fitting that the King Penguin set the final links of this particular game, and the photos were brilliant (you were very lucky to have had the opportunity to visit such interesting places). At least I didn't put too much pressure on your creaking abacus this month, although things would have been different had I gone with my first thoughts - as always!
As x-ray says, hopefully someone will open the Shrubbery on Friday nights for a bit of socialising, although I will be missing this coming week due to a prior appointment.
Thanks everyone - Adrian

I have just noticed that the MM game has finished. Although I have not entered the past few months I did so since the beginning and hoped to take part again soon when my Saturday morning schedule returned to normal. Many thanks to Gen2 and Crofter for years of enjoyment. Enjoy your retirement!
Warmest regards Lysander.
Warmest regards Lysander.
I can't believe that I missed the final farewell of the MM links. I know I've been a bit like hens teeth over the past few months (or rather lots of months) and as I had a spare half hour thought I'd pop in to say hi and participate in the KM and MM links, but alas only one ongoing. May I add my thanks to gen2 and crofter (et al), for the hard work they put in, in the organising of the games and to all those that managed to become monthly link setters, something I never quite managed to attain although coming close in the early days. Hopefully I'll be around a bit more in the coming months and be able to say hi to one or two of the old faces in various postings around the site.
