Well, they've all got 5 characters for a start :)
All contain other words with letters in the same sequence as the originals...ape, can, rod, ass, I've, sat, tot and tin. If word 4 is asterisked out, it is a three-letter word for 'donkey'. (I suppose 'I've' might be considered as two words, but what the hey!)
Good thinking Quizmonster!  Perhaps 'ave' beats 'I've'?  Ave Maria . . .
