In December there was 456 customers but in January there was only 400 customers how do you work out the percentage difference please.

56 over 456 multiply by 100
You subtract one from the other to get the difference, and then divide the difference by the first amount. That gives you the percentage in terms of that first amount.

*100 to get the usual % form.
400/456 = 0.88 = 12% difference.
In January there were 12% less than in December (56*100/456)

In December there were 14% more customers than January (56*100/400)
If you want to express the %age drop in January compared to December then you are comparing against 456 (your 100%) and mallyh is correct with 56/456 x 100 = just over 12% decrease.
