In philosophy what 5-letter name derived from Greek for 'take' is given to a proposition put forward in the course of an argument often accompanied by its own proof?
A toughie but I t hink it's AXIOM - if you look in a dictionary, it has a further philosophical meaning apart from how we usually understand the word. Also the etymology works.
Interestingly THEME and THESIS both come from the Greek for 'to put'.
Thanks Quizmonkey - I have axiom as a possible but my dictionary states 'from Greek axioun to consider worthy' so where does 'take' come into it. Its a sticky one.
Chambers Dictionary suggests the Greek root word is 'axios' = worthy, giving 'axioein' = to think worthy or take for granted. Perhaps that's the 'take' you're looking for?
