I've got AMASS as well. The clue refers to a state and I assume it means MASSACHUSETTS and if you take the first 5 letters it gives you AMASS.

Amass has to be right but isn't about the first five letters of Massachusetts. It says A state - with MASS being the recognised abbreviation for Massachusetts - hence A MASS.
