Two family members are dealing with invoices and receipts etc from an estate which is to be divided equally.

B has paid out £863.97 and had receipts (refunds in) of £276.06
C has paid out £657.18 and had receipts in of £2049.74

Obviously C owes B so they both receive the same - but how much does C owe B?

Well if it was me I would pool the money and then half it and they would each get £990.26 or is that too simplistic?

They both should end up with 402.33 clear....I think...

So, C should pay B 990.23

But that seems wrong too.

Debts = £1521.15 Receipts = £2325.80 balance = £804.65
each should receive £402. + few pence

A is in debt 863.97 - 276.06 = £587.91
B in in credit 2049.74 - 657.18 = £1392.56

So if B gives A £990 (now forgetting pence) leaves him with £402
A takes his debt of £587. 92 from £990 leaving him with £402.

Minus these 2 =£804.65
Divide by 2= £402.325

I got the answer £990.24 that C owes B.

This is my working - but I may have done it wrong!
Halving B's paid out amount of £863.97 = £431.99 so C owes B this.
Halving C's paid out amount of £657.18 = £328.59 so B owes C this.
Halving B's receipts of £276.06 = £138.03 so B owes C this.
Halving C's receipts of £2049.74 = £1024.87 so C owes B this.

Adding together the two amounts C owes B £431.99 + £1024.87 = £1456.86
Adding together the two amounts B owes C £328.59 + £138.03 = £466.62

C obviously owes B in the end - so subtract the two amounts
£1456.86 minus £466.62 = £990.24

Is this correct? I think Margo got the same as us ....... but it's been a head scratching time! I never thought something so simple could be so mind blowing unless it's me getting old!
