I did the heading wrong before (spelt Charlie as Charlue!!, so probably no-one saw my request, as only Kettledrum helped!

I have found a Charles who is apparently well known in his field, and fits your clue. If he wasn't paid for his work, what would he be.

Gosh, I was so confused, now I think I have it... ...does his surname begin with F ?? duurrr

The one I was thinking of has a surname beginning with B rather than f.
He was more of a philanthropist/social researcher.
I'm still not sure it fully fits the clue though
