See your previous thread. Number nine was a laxative handed out by army doctors suing the war. it became known as doctor's orders.

The original post was things found in a pharmacy. Doctor's orders was army slang for laxatives, given to those who were thought to be malingering.

At the time, standard medication in the army was numbered. The MO would tell the medic to give a pill of a certain category. Number nine was the most frequently prescribed, hence doctor's orders.
