Thanks lelliej, I now have two letters for 35a S?E? so you are probably right with STEG. Do you think 38a could be tone?

How could it be steg anyway as there's no such word?? Just guessing what to fill in isn't the way to solve crosswords :)

A steg is a word used in zoology for a gander, (see the freedictionary.com) - for information only

Golly - apologies. There's nothing listed in Chambers, and that's the main reference for most crosswords published in the UK. (But obviously there's nothing in the clue about ganders!).
