...with BT today, I've managed to be online for about 25-30 minutes in dribs and drabs since 0900ish, just keep losing signal. Have been on hold to their troubleshooting number for almost an hour now (handsfree 'phone just led on desk and 0800 number) they keep tell me they're very busy.

Hi Baldric, just seen your post. We have been OK but a bit slow earlier for a couple of hours. Also had a browser drop out for the first time ever since using w10 and edge. With BT.
Just been reconnected, it appears something heavy was backed into the BT Cabinet along our road and caused a few disconnections. They've done a temp. fix for now and will have to replace the cabinet ASAP according to Engineer I spoke to.
