46. Straight forward � a synonym and an anagram and then look it up but not a word you are likely to have heard of.
48. Concentrate on the first 2 words of the clue (7+3)
49. �devised� suggests an anagram of the preceding words.

re q49 if you only need 9 letters then use the words with that number of letters

As bluetit says, it is just a 9 letter anagram you want.  The result will give you a big clue as to what the rest of the clue is about.

I nearly blew it, I worked out the anagram and wrote it down for the first word, then realised what the answer was
