Can you name the town which was one of the largest Roman settlements in Britain but these days the amphitheatre is about all that there is to see. A remarkable little museum that tells it own story

Begins with C....
Are you hinting at the Roman name goodgoalie? There's one near us in Reading whose modern name begins with "S".
Chester? Cirencester?
Nah, English name, four syllables
Do you want the answer comerton or just hints?

I have stayed in that hotel. It's fabulous!

Go on then, Tilly, give the competition a go!
I've had a go and got it wrong, GG. :-(
Actally, I got it right!
I bet Boaty knows the answer too.
Did you find the canal? The setter loves canals, Roman settlements, piers, tunnels, lighthouses, hill forts, and especially old railways. Been doing this puzzle (nearly)every week for about 18 years, still waiting for a win....!
Yes, I found the canal, GG

I have entered. Wish me luck!
Great, good luck. Maybe you'll get hooked on this, too - and you don't even have to buy the Sunday Times. It's given me so much pleasure over the years: first thing I do on a Sunday, with a large black coffee. Flonska on here also a fan, but I think he's been away.
I shall look at next week's. Thank you, GG.
Sorry . . . missed the thread but posted further comment on this week's (8th Oct) puzzle here:-
