Getting a bit peed off by their persistence..letters..texts..e mail..calls...even had an engineer present to fit one..is it just Scottish Power behaving like this ?

Smart meters allow the network operators and energy companies to monitor energy/time of use.Because the grid infrastructu re is outdated they want you to use energy outside peak demand. With smart meters they can 'persuade' customers to do just that..... AVOID.

We had one fitted a few years ago, rather than waiting on them being compulsory and a possible charge incurred. I asked the engineer if we can put the said meter in a drawer and use our gas/ electric as normal will it make any difference to our bills?,...... No. Last week we receiver a 3 figure rebate.
No they can't, Jackdaw. You can only be disconnected in an absolute emergency, which you would be without the smart meter, or by court order.
It is true they don't need to come to property to disconnect you and can do it remotely but they can not and never will be able to disconnect you on a whim.
And why would they? They want to use electricity - that's how they make their money.
Regarding price hikes, they still have to give you the proper notice which gives you the legal right to switch providers without penalty if they put the charges up during the contract term if you are on a fixed term.
