Thanks MallyH, that's the only suggestion for 5 I've had so far ... not sure it's quite there, but gives me food for thought - I also wondered if the 'pale horse' may have something to do with the 4 horses of the apocalypse? The other one is not one I've asked about.

Yes it should ... I was referring to the pale horse ridden by death and my fingers typed before my brain was in gear.

Yes, I had a look at the colours of their horses after you mentioned the pale one - there might be something in it (I'm not sure 'palomino' and 'pale' sound similar enough for my answer to be right).

...I still quite like NEARSIDE HEADLIGHT - it would be difficult to suggest 'head' without relating to an entity of some sort, and at least it uses all of the ingredients (the faded picture and the positional '+').
That said, I'm sure something better will come up... eventually.

ha- just got back on and saw ProfMaisie's and that made me think of it. I was feeling so pleased as well. I think it's on the right lines mally- i wondered if we could extend it to soemthing to do with horses but can't think of anything
