Christmas carols were common as early as the 15th century. The custom of singing carols from house to house, collecting gifts, was called wassailing.
This, taken with dictionary definitions as above and the derivation of the word wassail - 'be well' or 'be healthy' would lead one to assume that there is no exact date.
