One of Queen Vic's sons began playing it for money and got into quite a bit of debt, apparently. When this became 'common' knowledge, folk were curious as to just what card game could cause so much 'noise' to surround the Firm. And so it became a quite popular game.
It would have helped had I concentrated more on what my search threw up, sorry Jazzdave.

My research was inconclusive- I think it's an unfair quiz question, actually. I'm putting "Ian Fleming" as it appears in Casino Royale published in the 1950s after which it was more widely known. We'll see!! All the best
The 'son' was probably Edward VII who was a noted gambler and ran up huge debts.
