Is it the swung dash?
Caret.
A caret (upside down y) is more of an instruction to insert a character or word - but I guess you could think of it as marking omission.
According to my dictionary, it's an upside down v meaning "a mark used in proof correction to indicate an omission".
Probably the right answer then - but as a proofreader I would never have worded the definition like that!
apostrophe?
Swung dash is the correct answer to the Telegraph crossword clue.
Or rather it is the one that is required to fit the spaces!
