Doh typo - rick (litte Richard) inside (emp)ty. I think that the setter has made an error with 'inside' the box.

If my undestanding of your explanations is right maybe the setter meant to say The emptyY box

I haven't tried it, but surely it's 'rick' in the word toy. When empty (missing the middle letter) toy becomes the required t.y.
I'm sure toy is correct and will check it out.

Bobbinwales, how would it have worked with 'empty toybox'? Wouldn't that have given TX, rather than the TY that was needed? I think the clue with 'empty toy' doesn't read very well, but it leads to the answer.
