Thanks Shaney, lightning fast!

I find 18 and 17 fairly obscure clues, and have never seen clubs being c before

I think 18d is GENIE!

GENIE is a spirit obtained by the "rubber" of the lamp.

Little surprised there, Behemoth. Do you not play cards at all? H for hearts, D for diamonds, S for spades and C for clubs.

C or C. abbreviation: Calorie, a kilocalorie; especially in place names on maps, Cape; castle (chess); Catholic; clubs (cards); cocaine (slang); Coloured (South African); Conservative; Corps; Cuba (International Vehicle Registration); the sum of $100 (North American slang).

I think you may be right elliotnet I had put resin but is it actually a spirit?
'Tis indeed Genie... thank's for putting me right.

Thank you Elliott, you get the star rating, no wonder I thought the answer was obscure. I now think it is an excellent clue, one of the best on the grid!

Thank you Biley for the enlightenment on c abbreviations. Actually, I am a keen player of most card games, especially bridge canasta and crib, so it just goes to show. Perhaps the golfer in me led me down the wrong track!
