All I could come up with was Stage (short for stagecoach). That's a conveyance but not really a 'sales floor up'!

Although slightly unsatisfactory the answer would appear to be tram, conveyance being the definition.

^ No he isn't. What he said was that there are two nine-letter answers in the grid, neither of which escalator fits. That doesn't mean that the answer has nine letters.

In Alphapuzzles there's no question of knowing the length of the required answer, or where to put the answer in the grid. My point about 'escalator' was to say that the only possible grid positions don't fit the word. (i.e. The fourth and sixth positions of neither of the possibilities are the same, so can't both be 'a'.)
