On the website it does NOT state two words. Also it has to lie alphabetically between CAM... and FORT....

The answers are not in alphabetical order. They are in the number of letters which is why the number of words is shown but not the length of the answer.

Macljane - you haven't presumably answered many of the questions yet, otherwise you would notice two things
1. As you say, they are in the order of the number of letters. All the 4 letter answers, come before all the 5 letter answers which come before the 6 letter answers and so on.
2. If you take all the 5 letter answers as a separate tranche then these are in alphabetical order. Same with the 6 letters, 7 letter tranches and so on

Q6 - starts with D
Q7 - starts with I
Q8 - starts with Ma
Q9 - starts with Mi
Q10 - starts with S
Q11 - starts with T

The only clue from memory that is not ordered as such is POLK (one of the 4 letter answers) is out of order.

I also have 54,55 and 96 out of sequence - and these answers really seem to fit - any thoughts ?

54 is out of order it is an 8 letter beginning with S, whilst 53 is a 9 letter word beginning with I.
Both these were obvious answers that I didn't count the letters!

I threw my answer sheet away ages ago and so I am having to look at them again and resolve them!

BeverlySA I have the same answers probably as you,
although I’m in a quandary about 55 relating it to 72. Any thoughts?

95 is 14 letters beginning with P
96 is 15 letters beginning with S
97 is 15 letters beginning with E - so 96 is out of order but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a setter's error with 2 "m"s in the surname, making 16 letters and then 96 would be in order!

72 is Chattanooga Which is in Tennessee
55 the state of Greenwich is Connecticut, which is abbreviated to CT
If this is switched it becomes TC but the abbreviation of Tennessee is TN and not TC
On the radio suggests a soundlike
Is Tennessee pronounced TeeCee. If it is, a nine letter answer "Tennessee" fits the pattern for 55

Any ideas about No 47 ? Also struggling with 49 as Highways doesn't fit the alphabetical order/number count and Waterway is singular.

47 is another out of order! It is a two word answer totalling 8 letters and beginning with S (2,6)
The Merseyside reference is a town famous for Rugby League. The mountain erupted a few years ago and lost a lot of its height when it did so. Probably the most famous eruption in recent times in mainland USA.

49 if you look up the definition of "nautical roads" it says
"is a body of water sheltered from rip currents, spring tides, or ocean swell where ships can lie reasonably safely at anchor without dragging or snatching.
There is a city in Alaska that has a name that is exactly that!
48 is an 8 letter answer beginning with U and 50 is 9 letter answer beginning with Ann
49 is a 9 letter answer so it should now be obvious
