Ok whatever, will see what satprof says as there should be a double letter so gaffe or gaffes should be easy to find. Why would clue say points tho if it meant just one point??

Looks like it's 'gaffe', singular, especially as it's 'A faux pas' but there is a 6-letter possibility that could make 'gaffes'. I'll try to quickly break the puzzle and then confirm it either way.

'Gaffe' works out just fine, so thanks to emmie. I'd guess that the use of 'points' rather than 'point' is just to use the correct third-person form.

I'm going for gaffe. The five letter option gives 'E' x 18, the six letter option gives 'E' only 6
