How many different solutions are there, or more importantly, how can I work this mathematical problem out?

as far as im aware there is only one solution and it is not a mathematical problem, it is a logic problem

Mac attack - Do you mean 'how many ways can you fit numbers 1 to 9 in a grid of 3 by 3 squares and still meet the required rules'?

That is exactly what I am thinking. There must be a formula for working it out, but ******** if I can come up with it!!!

according to this

its all logic, took me weeks to fathom it out, just have to keep on repeating yourself, going from side to side and up and down, thats how i do it anyway and it works.
