Could some kind soul please explain if this a good clue.
All the research I've done over many years indicates that the definition is at the start or end of a clue, unless the clue is &lit.
The definition is a loose one and is inside the clue.
Another photo finish between mally, geevo and emmie. Mally gets the gold star.
Two of the 4-letter possibilities can be eliminated; of the other two, one starts with a letter that could easily be Y. It also finishes with a quite likely A. (That one seems to work out.)
Bob: My understanding is that indicator words like initially are allowed to be anywhere in the clue. In this case, the double meaning only really works with initially at the end.
