I am totally stuck on this one, the published answer is 640 but I cannot even work it backwards knowing the answer.
In preparation for a flood, emergency services sourced sandbags for the properties on Deluge Crescent, offering 15 sandbags per house, and 18 per block of flats. 30 properties collected bags, which represented four-fifths of the houses and two-thirds of the flat blocks. If emergency services set aside 1,000 bags for Deluge Crescent, how many went unclaimed.
4/5 of houses means each house took 12 bags on average (4/5 x 15). Similarly 2/3 of flats means each flat also took 12 bags on average (2/3 x 18). So, with both flats and houses taking 12 bags on average, the 30 properties took 360 (30 x 12). With 1000 allocated 640 were unclaimed (1000 - 360).
Thanks Llanfair for your help. Two of us spent ages trying to work out the number of houses and flats that took up the offer, never thought of taking the percentages of the sandbags. Once again thanks
