I agree that 'Hastings' must be the required answer for 49 but it's a lousy clue. Hastings was a retired army Captain. Japp was the (Chief) Inspector.

It the letter count for 34 correct? (I was thinking 'Seamer' but that's only 6).

Just to throw a spanner in the works, the only other answer I can come up with, is Bellingham. There is a baby Belling cooker, and a Bellingham light. ???? and Bellingham is a town in Northumberland.
