once around the block?

Much better

Thanks canary42- but is it a common expression? I know there's a song of that name, but the only expression I know is something along the lines of 'been around the block (a few times)'

I take it to mean go round the block to waste time or be out of site.

If someone arrives for an event on time or a bit early but doesn't want to be seen yet, they would go once around the block to take up time.

Imagine a wedding, the bride has arrived but there's no groom. The bride's car would then go round the block once or twice, in the hope the groom turnt up in the meantime.

"out of site." ???????

"out of sight"...
