Only answer I can think of is TEND?
Question Author

Thanks for that geo but, it doesn't fit. I had that initially until I put in the answers going across which definitely give the R and the E, it's bugging me as a Collin's Crossword Solver Dictionary is at stake here!!

Perhaps if I change my previous answers to change the word to

- A - E

Can anyone think of an answer to this please?

Rake. If you wear a hat at a rakish angle it slopes to one side.
Question Author

Thanks Johnmof, I thought that too but it's a bit vague isn't it, where do these crosswords setters get their ideas from I wonder?

What a difference the right letters make,eh?
Question Author

Alright geo, have a laugh, it's on me! I got my cavern and caveat mixed up, don't we all!

Mo

Sorry to add my bit but this is from Chambers and may help:

rake, noun inclination from the vertical or horizontal, eg of a ships funnel, a theatre stage, etc; an angle, eg between the face of a cutting-tool and the surface on which it is working, or the wings and body of an aircraft.
verb intransitive to incline.
verb transitive to slope; to cut aslant.

Question Author

Thanks Flamingo,

That confirms it, RAKE it is then.

Thanks everybody,

Mo
