In the 16th 17th and 18th century butter was thought to have healing powers for things such as colds fevers and other such ailments. At about this time in ports such as Whitehaven rum was being imported from the West Indies Carribean along with sugar from various areas around the trading routes from these ports. The rums were mixed with the sugar and other ingredients to produce the rum butters which are still very common at Chistmas time throughout Cumbria today.
