Not at all baffling.

If you think of a two-digit number and subtract the sum of the two digits, you will always be left with a multiple of 9.

The multiples of 9 all refer to the same symbol - though it will change every time you click on the globe.

This will confirm what Hammond has said.

If you look at the numbers on the grid 1-99 every ninth number, 0-9-18-27-36-45-54-63-72-81-90-99 all have the same symbol at the side. When you have chosen a number and deducted its sum, i.e. 96 minus 9+6 = 81 or 43 minus 4+3 = 36 or 57 minus 5+7 = 45 you will see that the new number is divisible by nine. Whenever you click on the blue circle every ninth number on the grid changes to correspond with the one that appears in the blue circle.
