took this to mean that starch in clothes makes them stiff whilst starch in food makes one fat (flabby, soft!)

Don't think 19d is lichen - it's lichee. No end of fungal plant is lichen without the n, on eastern, add an e and this gives lichee. Also lichen does not fit with 26a.

Calling 08012006: Re 7d: Your answer is correct but is not anagrammatic. Others=Rest (eg Remainder) + House=Home (eg Abode), giving 'Rest Home', hence 'elderly here' but no hidden anagrams.
