I have been told that the accepted centre of London is both Hyde Park Corner and St Paul's Cathedral. Is one of these correct or is it elsewhere?

Thanks

I was always told it was the Eleanor Cross at Charing Cross; aren't black cabs menat to take you anywhere up to 6 miles from the Cross?

yeah, a tricky one this, I always heard that the centre was a shop on a corner of trafalgar square (so Charing Cross is generally acceptable).

Just wondering whether hearing St.Pauls as the centre relates to the original City of London (Square Mile)

the old mileage stones (Great North Road etc.) always measured the distance to charing Cross, so I'd go for that

I agree with Charing Cross.
Nothing to do with this question, Andy, but did you see the follow-up question about 'perfect squares'? You and I provided answers to the original question, but the questioner came back with another which I - being no mathematician - could not answer. I got the impression that you probably could and told him I hoped you'd be along to enlighten him. You can find it by clicking here
I'm sure he'd be grateful for any help. Cheers

Thanks everyone. Having done some web searching the CENTROID centtre of London is apparently St Paul's but the accepted centre is where the statue of King Charles I stands just south of Trafalgar Square. And this is the same site as the original Queen Eleanor's Cross. I also found some trivia that says the EXACT centre is a telephone sized police station (smallest in the country) set into a granite lampost very near to Charles' statue! And Quizmonster, I'll return to the squares issue, thanks.
I always understood that the point in London from where distances was measured was the statue of King Charles the Martyr in Charing Cross....
Ooops!! Beat me to it, Mr Cheever!!
