After an hour or more (again!) with a UK Road Atlas I have found 2 of the answers ------

Could be a labrador (8 letters) I think will be Blackdog.

A meadow breaks up an old queen (9 letters) I think will be Cleveleys.

That still leaves me to find the answers to:

A Scottish hotspot (7 letters)

Rest by a watery path (8 letters)

Anybody good enough to solve these?

Rest by a watery path? On the Isle of Sheppey there is a place called Leysdown-on-Sea.

Thanks to NikkiB -- it's a possibility if Leysdown can be used on its own without the 'on Sea'.

That justs leaves 'A Scottish hotspot' with 7 letters. I wonder if that would be a place with 'burn' in the name but my searches of the road atlas have not come up with anything.

On one of the Orkney Islands there is a place called Burness. Yet, as I'm sure you've already discovered, there are countless Scottish places with burn both as a prefix or suffix in the name. Frustrating!

NikkiB -thanks. I had wondered about Burness and if the 'ess' was 'S' for Scotland but was not too happy that it was correct. I have spent several hours looking at the UK Road Atlas! Some that I had previously missed I later spotted (such as Blackdog for 'Could be a labrador', but the Scotish hotspot and Rest by a watery path are outstanding. I am not too happy about your suggestion for the latter because to be correct with 8 letters I could not include the 'on-Sea'.

There must be other ways to drive oneself mad !!!!!!!
