Charles Bukowski's novel Post Office is the first-person account of Henry Chinaski, a hard-drinking gambler and womanizer who goes to work for the United States Postal Service in Los Angeles. The story follows his experiences at the post office, weaving them together with his accounts of romantic affairs, sexual encounters, drinking, and gambling. Chinaski's life is full of encounters with various unsavory, tragic, or ridiculous characters.
In the Postman Always Rings Twice.. Frank Chambers was a drifter who had been in prison. he lands up at Nicks Diner and begins an affair with Cora.
Nothing to do with being a postman. It's just a metaphor
Frank means and does right, but it all goes wrong: what goes around comes around, or, as they apparently say , the postman always rings twice.

Charles Bukowski's book is a good read Diane. It's absolutely hilarious in parts.....and very sad in others.
I have seen the film of The Postman Always Rings Twice but as with most novels that are turned into film...they never do the books justice. Although the 1981 remake with Jack Nicholson was more faithful to the book than Tay Garnett's film version .
James M.Cain has that same taut style of writing as Dashiel Hammett.Two of his other books..Double Indemnity and Mildred Pierce are very good and were turned into very successful films.
