a beautiful flowering plant of the lily family derives part of its botanical name from the ancient roman name for one of the channel islands. What is the modern name of the channel island from which this lily now derives its common name?

The Guernsey Lily (Nerine Sarniensis)The Roman name for Guernsey was Sarnia.

To have a plant species named after you is a singular honour and such has been bestowed on the Island of Guernsey with the naming of an amaryllis as "Nerine sarniensis"; Sarnia being the name the Romans gave to the island of Guernsey.

Hi, pantolady,
You didn't state how many letters should be in the answer.
I see that patsyann has given you The Guernsey Lily, and there is also the Jersey Lily, Amaryllis belladonna lily, and the original name for Jersey was Augia.
I hope either one of these suggestions turn out to be the right answer for you.
